Ms. Allen's kiddos had a blast building their place value skills using manipulatives in school! We talked about important vocabulary, including “tens” and “ones.” They learned how, even by using different strategies, the result would be the same. Those strategies included using manipulatives, ten frames, and drawing pictures. Students collaborated with one another, and shared the strategies that worked best for them!

This fall, Mrs. Thompson’s kindergarten class has been collecting items for their class' interactive fall wall pictured below. They turned their fall wall into a fall walk to culminate their “5 Senses” unit. They were all key contributors as they gathered acorns, leaves, and twigs to make their fall “people” when they returned to class. Each student problem-solved how to turn their fall gatherings and pumpkin seeds (donated by class parents) into a fall person. Some pumpkin seeds were tasted, too! To effectively communicate to viewers their art, each student labeled her/his work with the 5 senses of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Pictured with their masterpieces are future UCPS graduates.

The class finished the Early Asian Civilization unit with several culminating activities. Students collaborated to create the Great Wall of China and communicated various facts they learned about the wall with each other. We also wrote “I love school” using Chinese characters. Lastly, they brainstormed and wrote several facts about the Early Asian Civilization. The students enjoyed learning about Diwali, The Chinese New Year, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the key factors for a civilization's success.
